Paint Mines Interpretive Park

Colorado, Day One:
After driving all night we reached Paint Mines Interpretive Park in Calhan, Colorado. Darryl had been here once, and wanted Eric and I to see it. We had hoped to arrive there at about daybreak, but road construction, and traffic in general, caused us to lose a couple hours on the drive out. No major incidents on the over night drive out. Well, Darryl almost ran us out of gas on one of those long lonely 3:00 am stretches in Nebraska, but that almost happens at least once on every trip to Colorado anyway.
Not much to say about the paint mines. This is actually an area where native Americans gathered colors for their paints. It’s only been a regional park since 2003, so it’s still kind of a secret, even to Coloradoans. If you decide to visit here let me give you and insider’s tip. The path goes in two directions. If you just want to visit the formations and get the heck out of there take the path to the right. Take the path to the right even though it goes up hill. Trust me on this one folks.
