Colorado Day 3

The first time we crossed the continental divide.

Colorado day 3 started out on shaky ground. We knew that we wanted to go to Lake City to jeep over Engineer Pass. When we got here the command decision was made to eat some lunch at a local BBQ shack as we knew it would be several hours before we had a chance to eat again. During the meal of some awesome BBQ we decided that we were going to stay in Lake City, but drive to the city of Creede.
We booked a cabin from a nice couple here in Lake City. They got everyone’s attention when the question was asked are you guys interested in seeing any moose at all? At all. That’s been one of our main topics of conversation for 3 days now. As fate would have it the secret moose location was right on the way to Creed, so we decided to check it out. Well we did spot a couple moose, and got some crappy pictures of them. We actually spotted the moose during a hail storm. We were somewhat dejected, but we thought, “Hey that’s better than no moose at all right?” On our way out we commented on out that how great would it be if there was a moose in that pond right there.
Not to be easily discouraged we continued on to Creede. Creede is a legendary silver mining town. The drive through the Bachelor Mine loop takes you past the remnants the mines that made creed famous. The highlight of the drive for us was the stop at the Last Chance Mine. That’s where we met Pamela Smith. Pamela works at the Last Chance Mine. Pamela is the caretaker of the mine area and small museum. She is also a self confessed nerd. She must be some sort of geological nerd, as she seemed to know about all the different types of rocks and minerals available there. There is a fascinating story behind the mine, and the current owner, but I’ll let you read that for yourself. http://lastchancemine.com/lcm.html
On the way out of the loop we spotted a church that my guide book said was in Lake City. No wonder I’d never been able to find it.
Before we left Creede we walked the streets looking in the shops. In a gallery there I met a wonderful artist by the name of Lindsay Leavell. I urge you to go to Lindsay’s web site, and look at here artwork. Not only is she a wonderful artist and a nice person, but as it turns out she was originally from Ludington. Yes that Ludington.
On the way back from Creede we stopped at secret moose location. There is a story that goes behind this image, but you’ll have to talk to each of us to find it out. I am not going to steal everyone’s good story, but to sum it up, there was a moose in that pond. How could this story and any better? When we got back to our cabin there was a plate of cookies on the table. Now that’s a happy ending
